CAN YOU HELP ME CHOOSE THE RIGHT PUMP?
Pumps vary in suction type, settings, portability, intended use, cup type and size, weight, open and closed systems, noise, and of course price.
Women vary in how they respond to the pump, pumping needs, size and budget.
Some of my clients come to me after trying several pumps and spending hundreds of dollars. They have complained that the pump
they bought/rented either HURT or DIDN'T WORK. Unfortunately if a pump doesn't extract milk(do what it's intended to do), the mom perceives this as a lack of milk supply (perceived insufficiency of milk is magnified by an incorrect pump) and this leads to the mom giving up on pumping or breastfeeding. If she's exclusively pumping, she dries up.
Often times moms don't need a pump, just PROMPT help (ideally free).

Not every pump works for every woman. For some women, NO PUMP WORKS!

And then; NOT EVERY MOM needs a pump.

Don't believe everything you read on pump reviews. It's a competitive market. You need someone who is not biased and has
an open mind.

On one end of the spectrum, there are small manual pumps, on the other end, hospital grade rental pumps.

Electric is not necessarily better than manual. I've observed this. Some moms leak so much, they don't need a pump.

Not all hospital grade pumps are CLOSED system pumps (even though most hospitals have these....). Hospital grade pumps are designed to be used by more than one user. There are other pumps in the market, available for purchase that are in this category, unfortunately they are not sold in Canada yet (Hygeia and Nurture III).

I offer an innovative approach to choosing a pump, a service not offered anywhere else in Edmonton: I let my clients try demo pumps.

I am a registered nurse, experienced in paediatrics and ICU (26 years experience).
I started offering this service as a request from my clients. I EVEN have models for pumps I do not sell, to offer my clients options. Moms can try with a protective covering, however pump parts have been sterilized.
I offer this eco-friendly service to save moms the frustration (and expense) of buying/renting the wrong pump. Unfortunately, not all pumps work for every mom.My clients have complained of  injury/trauma to the nipples and "spasm" pain from pumps. Lots of them have given up trying to pump.
Others have told me that it takes them F O R E V E R to pump, sometimes 45 min-1 hour for a tiny amount of milk. This is not necessary.
Unfortunately, if a pump hurts or is so INEFFICIENT it take too long, you won't use it. If your baby is not latching on or is separated from you, your milk supply will not be maintained if you can't use the pump. I have helped over a thousand mom in the last 4 years.
My sterilization process was approved my a medical doctor. One of my first clients was a microbiologist, another a physician who works at a Breastfeeding Clinic and refers all her patients to me. She liked my common sense breastfeeding tips that I give all my moms.

If you run across any information discrediting any "try before you buy" or "buy after you try" pump service, I can assure you the information you are reading is incorrect and not up to date with latest methods.
